Projects Handbook
INTRODUCTI ON TO PROJECTS
A project is any temporary, organized effort
that creates a unique product, service, process or
plan.
The project
component of the Project Management Certified
Project Manager (OCPM) Program provides an
opportunity
to apply and integrate classroom learning with the real issues within the
workplace.
While
much of public manager’s work involves planning, regulation and oversight, the
new
economy
requires new roles and skills – quality management, optimizing the
contributions of others
and project
management. Increasingly as Tom Peters says, “In the new economy all work is
project
work,”
and since OCPM is developing managers for the future, successful project
management is
essential.
This project handbook is designed to support OCPM Program participants in
successfully
completing
OCPM projects.
Why Do
Job-Related
Projects
Anyway?
Job-related
projects provide OCPM Program participants with hands-on
application
of knowledge and skills they are acquiring in the Certified
Public
Manager (CPM) training sessions. These projects join “theory”
with
“practical application” and benefit the participants and their
agencies,
as well as their customers – both internal and external.
Projects
provide the opportunity for deeper learning through the practice
of newly
acquired skills and strategies.
